Pamplona is widely known as a ‘fortress city’ in the district of Navarre, Spain. The history of the fortification dates back to the 1500s when there was a fear of invasion from nearby regions among the city dwellers. Enclosed by impenetrable defensive walls, it was unable for the city to expand to serve the growing population. During the era of modernization, the infrastructure and services of Pamplona considerably improved, but due to the fortification, the city could grow only vertically. There was growth only in the residential sector, where the houses had to be narrower without courtyards.

It was only during the early 1900s that the decision of the destruction of the walls and abandoning the building laws was taken by the local bodies. The walls on the southern side were destroyed, and as the fortification on the other sides did not prevent the city’s infrastructure growth, they were kept intact.

Pamplona grew rapidly in the 20th century with developments in industrial sectors and a rise in population. The industries, which synchronized with the residential areas, were moved to dedicated industrial parks. Residential development was marked by buildings with more than ten storeys and single-family houses in the metropolitan regions. This new development also allowed for open spaces like green areas and recreational parks.
