The Independence Struggle & Architectural Significance

The British Raj is a significant chapter in Indian history, having a lot of cultural and contextual impact on both nations. Architecture also played a significant role in the historical independence of India and left remnants of British colonisation. Some of the architectural marvels like the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata, the Ripon Building in Chennai, and many other monumental buildings have thrived in the Indian cities and have impacted our heritage, culture and urban landscape of the cities. Although the nuances of the era are gone, these architectural marvels stand as a testimony to the historical connections of the two nations.

India’s struggle for independence was a long and tedious one fought with resistance and resilience and finally achieved in 1947. The Non-Violent Movement by MK Gandhi showcasing India’s resilience and power to fight for its independence shook the world, in a way that had never been showcased. The United Kingdom has recognised these efforts, and the resilience of the Indians and respects them for showcasing their valour.

Post-Independence Era

After Independence, India has been on a constant journey in the quest for development, nation-building preserving the historical context, and building a New India for the younger generations that were coming. During this time, The United Kingdom engaged with India, not just in political considerations but also in cultural exchanges, architecture and urban planning.

Many British architects and planners have contributed to the design of modern cities in India. The design of the city of New Delhi, India’s Capital by Sir Edwin Lutyens with monumental grandness in the government buildings and applying traditional native principles to achieve vernacular outputs that blend with the context of India’s History. Post-Independence, India became self-reliant and yet maintained diplomatic ties with the United Kingdom.
